Yoga is fundamentally concerned with learning about ourselves. It’s not all about becoming flexible and strong, these are just tools to help us to inquire within ourselves as to what’s going on. Next time you’re on your mat instead of trying to push yourself into a perfect posture ask yourself: ‘How does this feel?’, ‘Where do I feel the stretch and what it is like?’, ‘Where can I feel my breath and what quality does it have?’. Use this feedback to get to know your body, breath and mind. Once you’ve come out of a posture ask yourself: ‘How has my energy changed?’, ‘What effect has this had on my mental state?’. Use the movement and the stillness to develop your awareness of yourself by approaching your practice with the spirit of inquiry.
